EUSA has not moved an inch in its call for the President to replace the Minister of Basic Education. The Union rejects the Minister's claims that only a small percentage of teachers and learners contracted COVID-19 and that infections were imported from communities.
The calculation was based on all 440 000 teachers, although many did not return on 8 June 2020 due to comorbidities. EUSA has also received reports that principals and officials were instructed to withhold information about confirmed cases, and is consulting its legal team.
The report was silent on the many schools that could not open because they did not meet COVID-19 health and safety regulations. EUSA will organise pickets at district and provincial offices countrywide and maintains that schools should close until the country passes the pandemic peak.
Issued by S Bhengu, President.
