Education and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (EUSA) expresses grave concern regarding recent announcements by provincial Departments of Education, particularly the Western Cape, which revealed plans to cut over 2,400 teaching positions due to budget reductions imposed by National Treasury.
Many teachers are already managing classrooms of more than 80 learners. If the cuts go ahead, a single teacher could be forced to stand in front of more than 200 learners — making effective teaching impossible and compromising the quality of education our children deserve.
EUSA regards the decision as a direct assault on the right of children to a quality education. The Union demands that government develop a comprehensive plan to increase the education budget across all provinces, and calls for meaningful dialogue. Should no viable solution be presented, EUSA will take its message to the streets and mobilise communities to defend the right to education.
