EUSA, a non-politically aligned union representing more than 27 000 teachers and support staff, petitioned President Cyril Ramaphosa to establish a COVID-19 Commission of Inquiry into the embezzlement of funds directed at fighting the pandemic in schools.
The Union asked the Commission to begin with two cases:
- A report that the National Department of Basic Education procured 3 500 water tanks for R600 million.
- A KZN Department of Education report of R28 000 per 5 000-litre water tank and R6 500 per hand-washing station — far above local market prices.
EUSA requested the widest possible terms of reference, and that commissioners indicate who should face prosecution and on what charges.
